Specific type of flow meters - part 2

Gas Flow Meters In general gas flow meters are designed to measure the flow or volume of some form of gas moving through some type of conduit. Many of the types of flow meters that are used to measure flow of liquids can also be used to measure the flow of gasses but this is not always the case. Be sure to read product literature to ensure any product you purchase will work for the application you have in mind.

Ultrasonic Flow Meters Ultrasonic flow meters are a form of ultrasonic flow measurement volumetric flowmeters that are designed to work with "dirty" water or liquids that have particulates or bubbles in the flow. They are available as clamp on flow meters or as invasive flow meters. These require that your liquid is conductive and will work with distilled or other "clean" water with out aerating the liquid to introduce bubbles.

Level Sensors Level sensors can be used to detect the level of liquids or powders. These usually are available as continuous or point value type of level sensors. The continuous level sensors usually operate within a certain range and give continuous output to your monitoring systems. The point value type of level sensor mark a specific level and usually connect to a flow control device or alarm.

Magnetic Flow Meters and Insertion Magnetic Flow Meters Magnetic flow meters are also called electromagnetic flowmeters or induction flowmeters and work with conductive fluids to measure flow across a controlled magnetic field. One of the major advantages of the magnetic flow meter is that it has no moving parts. These are generally used with waste water or other conductive liquids.

Wedge Flow Meters A wedge flow meter is primarily a differential pressure device used for nearly all liquids. These are especially useful for measuring flow with liquids that have suspended solids and slurries as well as viscous fluids.

Turbine Flow Meter A turbine flow meter measures the rate of flow in a conduit using a rotor or turbine that spins as the liquid or gas flows through the blades. The speed of rotation is a direct function of the flow rate of the liquid of gas or liquid and can be sensed by the turbine flow meter using gears, photoelectric cell or magnetic pickup.

Ultrasonic Level An ultrasonic level is a sensor that is normally mounted in the top portion of a tank or above the liquid that is to be measured. These operate by sending a high frequency sound continuously and measuring the time it takes for that sound to bounce back to the sensor. It is important to know the temperature range of your tanks as these sensors compensate for temperatures within the rated range of the device.
